As I ran a 21 km half marathon last Sunday morning, I had some realisations during the run.

I ran half of the run with the 2 hour 'pace runners'. Pace runners are people who run at a consistent pace throughout the race, so you know how your timing.

About 20 people ran with the 2 hour pace runners.

It was easier running together as a group. And it was fun with them.

There was great energy running together with the group.

As soon as I broke away from the group, and started to run on my own, it became harder.

It was more of a struggle to run by myself.

As I was running on my own, the African proverb came into my head:

"If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together"

I slowed down and ran together with the mob, it was more fun, looking out at the rising sun at 7.30 am.

Perfect conditions came, with no wind, and sun rise over the still Waitemata Harbour.

The run was easier than I thought, being all on flat ground, no hills.

My 15k and 10k training days were harder than the 21 km.

Waterfront Half Marathon was a fun run. I would do it again.
