This weekend I experienced one of the Gisborne Railbike Adventure tours.
The only railbike tour in the world.
This activity consists of two people peddling bikes on a frame that attaches to train tracks.
Geoff our tour guide, insightfully told us about the local history of the railway line.
The train line used to run between Gisborne to Napier, however, has not been used for 12 years.
We experienced the Waipaoa Bridge 1 hour guided tour, described on the website as:
"a relaxed one-hour return journey that takes you out through rural plains, past vineyards and across the picturesque Waipaoa bridge"
We cruised through the countryside taking in the views.
I was surprised how quickly the railbike glided along the tracks. I could see how rail became such an efficient way to travel in the past.
The railbike experience was different from riding a bike. All one needs to do is pedal, and with two people peddling (if both of them are peddling! 🤣) the railbike picks up speed quickly.
The Railbike Adventures has 3 tours:
Mahia Coast to Viaduct
Beach Loop
Waipaoa Bridge
Next time I would like to try Mahia Coast to Viaduct, a 3 hour tour along the beautiful coastline.
If you can ride a bike then you could do the Railbike Adventure!
Groups can be accommodated.
