Maungatautari - Sanctuary Mountain - Heal in this Ancient Forest

Completely sheltered from the outside world.

We walked through the gates into an ancient forest.

We entered Maungatautari, the predator-free area also known as Sanctuary Mountain.

It was like going back in time.

The incredibly fresh air, native trees, little streams, and birdsong healed me.

It really is worth the effort.

Because there are no predators the native forest has restored itself. The forest is so dense.

The most amazing thing is that over 20 years kiwi birds have been introduced into this pest-proof environment and the number of kiwi birds has increased from 400 to 3000!
