Omanawanui Track is located at the very end of the Waitakere Ranges in west Auckland.
Surrounded by stunning hills and lush forest, the bush walk starts at Omanawanui Car Park, about an 1 hour drive from Auckland central.
The drive in does take some time, with the sealed road becoming a gravel road. At the car park there are public toilets and a camp ground.
With a range of walks to do from the car park, we chose the Ridge Track.

The Ridge Track takes 2 hours, according to the sign.
We did a shortened version of about 1.5 hours.
A steady climb with many steps, this one got my heart beating.
I loved starting my Saturday morning walking through the bush and climbing up to the top of the mountain.

What a stunning view from the top!
Looking out over the water coming in from both sides. The Pacific Ocean bringing itself into the west coast beaches and sweeping wide into Manukau Harbour.
You would never know it is only 1 hour from Auckland CBD.

Omanawanui feels so remote. I felt like I was on the East Cape of New Zealand.
The walk along the ridge is amazing!
Most of the track is a board walk and the track is well formed. However, do be prepared to walk up (and down) many steps.
There is one steep section where chains can be used to pull oneself up.

If you are looking for a decent walk in the Auckland Region, Omanawanui may be your next one.
