Last week my company had our mid-winter work event: Social Cooking.
30 of us were put into teams of 4 to prepare a meal.
A Mystery Box Challenge
Each team was given the same ingredients: leek, yam, chicken breast, onion, cabbage, carrot, chili, rice, and a wide variety of spices, sauces & baking agents.
With no recipe, we had 55 minutes to cook whatever we wanted (which was not easy without a recipe!) - but part of the fun.
Fortunately, I was put into a team of people who knew how to cook!
We spent quite a lot of time planning what to cook before deciding on:
Korean Pancake & Balsamic Dressing: grated yam, carrot, cabbage, flour, egg, salt, water
Stir-fry chicken & sesame seeds
Baked chicken breast with paprika, cumin & Japanese hot spice
Led mostly by our positive female head chef, I was instructed to grate carrot and yam followed by chicken spice preparation.
I tried to just follow and help the team
With only 55 minutes it was quite frantic and a bit stressful.
As part of the challenge we had to write a poem - which I did. I tried to write something meaningful.
After a fast 55 minutes we presented our meals to the Judge.
I was surprised by the quality of gourmet meals, such as pumpkin pie, and curry.
Following this, we got to eat our meals.
"I'm not sure if it was the camaraderie of cooking together, the fun or stress of it all - our food tasted really good!!"
The Korean Pancake turned out amazing.
Cooking together made the food taste better.
Maybe because there's gratitude for doing something together, and making an effort.
Lastly, I had to read our poem in front of everyone, which made me very nervous.
To my surprise, my poem won and we received Whittakers New Zealand Black Plum & Roasted Almonds chocolate 🍫 as the prize 😋
Thank you to CivilPlan Consultants and Social Cooking for a good night.
